Before a recruiter ever reads your CV, software often reads it first. Many employers use an applicant tracking system, or ATS, to collect applications, extract details from each file and let recruiters search and filter candidates. If that software cannot read your CV properly, your experience may never show up in a search. This free CV scanner opens your file in your own browser, checks it against 40 practical rules and gives you an estimated ATS score with a clear list of fixes.
Free ATS CV Checker: Scan Your Resume and Get an ATS Score
Upload a PDF, Word (.docx) or text file, or paste your CV text. For a keyword match score, open the optional box and paste the job description you are applying for. Then press the scan button. Your result appears in a few seconds.
How the ATS Score Is Calculated
The scanner awards up to 100 points across seven areas. Each area checks specific things that commonly cause trouble for parsing software or for recruiters who search by keyword.
| Category | Points | What is checked |
|---|---|---|
| File and parseability | 15 | Readable text, file type, columns, tables, text boxes, images |
| Contact details | 10 | Name, email, phone, LinkedIn or portfolio link, location, contact info outside headers |
| Section structure | 15 | Standard headings such as Experience, Education, Skills and Summary |
| Experience quality | 20 | Dates, bullets, action verbs, measurable results, weak phrases |
| Keywords and skills | 20 | Match against your job description, or skills coverage if none is given |
| Length and readability | 10 | Word count, page count, long paragraphs |
| Formatting hygiene | 10 | Symbols and icons, date consistency, capital letters, file name, email style |
A score of 85 or higher means your CV is in very good shape. Between 70 and 84 is solid with room to improve. Scores between 55 and 69 suggest several fixes are worth making, and anything below that usually means a structural problem such as an image-only file or a multi-column layout.
How to Use the CV Scanner
- Add your CV. Drag a file onto the upload box, tap to browse, or switch to the paste tab. Word files in .docx format give the most detailed layout checks.
- Paste a job description (optional). This turns on keyword matching, which is the most useful way to tailor a CV to a specific role.
- Press Scan My CV. The tool extracts the text the way a parser would and runs the checks.
- Fix the red items first. They cost you the most points. Then work through the amber suggestions.
- Scan again. Edit your file and upload the new version to see your score move.
What Is an ATS and How Does It Read Your CV?
An applicant tracking system stores applications, pulls out fields like your name, job titles, employers, dates and skills, and lets recruiters search that data. Parsing quality varies. Simple, single-column documents with standard headings are the safest. Complex layouts, graphics and unusual section names are more likely to confuse a parser. Most systems do not automatically reject a CV just because it scores low, but if your details are scrambled or missing, a recruiter searching for your skills may never find you.
10 Tips for an ATS-Friendly CV
- Use a single column and a clean layout with plain fonts.
- Choose standard headings: Summary, Work Experience, Education, Skills, Certifications.
- Put your name, email and phone number in the main body, not in the header or footer.
- List jobs in reverse chronological order with the title, employer, city and dates.
- Use one date format throughout, such as "Mar 2019 - Present".
- Start bullets with strong action verbs and add numbers wherever you honestly can.
- Mirror the wording of the job description for skills you really have.
- Avoid tables, text boxes, icons, charts and photos inside the document.
- Keep it to one or two pages unless your field expects more.
- Name the file clearly, for example "Firstname_Lastname_CV.pdf".
ATS Tips for Gulf and Middle East Job Seekers
Hiring in the Gulf mixes international applicant systems with local expectations, so a little extra care helps. State your professional license clearly if the role requires one, such as a DHA, DOH or MOH license, along with the issuing authority and status. List your visa or notice period only if the employer asks for it, and keep personal details to what the role needs. Many regional CVs include a photo, but an ATS cannot read it and it can disrupt the layout, so consider a version without one for online applications. If you worked in the region, spell out the city and country so recruiters can filter by location. Norms differ between employers, so follow the instructions in each job advert.
CV Scanner FAQ
Is my CV uploaded to a server?
No. The scanner runs inside your browser. Your file and the text from it are not sent to our servers or stored by this tool.
Why did my PDF show little or no text?
The PDF is probably a scan or an image, so there is no real text to read. Export a text-based PDF from Word or Google Docs, or upload the .docx version.
What is a good ATS score?
Aim for 80 or above. More important than the number is fixing the red items, because they are the ones most likely to affect parsing.
Does a 100 score guarantee an interview?
No. A well-formatted CV makes it easier for software and recruiters to read your experience, but hiring decisions also depend on your qualifications and the competition.
Which file type is best?
A .docx file or a text-based PDF both work in most systems. Follow the employer's instructions if they request one in particular.
